Demakufu/Who I Am

MARTIN OWAKA

AKA Demakufu is a pioneering Kenyan DJ celebrated for shaping Nairobi’s matatu music culture. Starting with a passion project in 2012 and a second-hand mixer from his father, he rose from Nairobi’s Industrial Area to national recognition—his mixes now heard daily across the country.

Originally from Western Kenya, Demakufu moved to Nairobi in 2011 after high school to pursue computer studies. However, driven by an early love for music, he secretly enrolled in a DJ academy—despite initial resistance from his family. While working jobs in Nairobi’s Industrial Area to make ends meet, he kept learning and practicing, eventually earning his father’s support, who bought him his first DJ mixer. That moment marked the turning point from hobbyist to professional.

What began in 2012 as a passion project soon grew into a powerful brand. Demakufu became a household name by creating uniquely styled street mixes that quickly spread through Nairobi’s matatu routes—from Rongai to Umoja, Dandora to Kayole. His sound was raw, relatable, and distinctly Kenyan, giving him massive street credibility and a loyal fan base.

Today, at 34 years old, Demakufu is more than a DJ—he’s a cultural influencer and mentor. He co-hosts a radio show on Homeboyz Radio, connecting with a wider audience beyond the streets. In 2016, he launched the Demakufu Entertainment Academy, a three-month intensive program designed to equip aspiring DJs with practical skills, industry insight, and branding strategies.

Beyond music and mentorship, Demakufu is also an innovator. Through his “Demakufu Free WiFi” project, he installed free internet in select matatus—enhancing the commuter experience while boosting access to his mixes and content.

His career is a testament to grit, vision, and staying rooted in street culture while embracing innovation. Demakufu continues to inspire a new wave of Kenyan DJs to believe in their hustle, own their style, and shape their own sound.
